- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg

- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Brushing:
- 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon milk
For Garnish:
- Powdered sugar
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix well.
- Gradually add flour and knead until a soft, smooth dough forms. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Make the Custard Filling:
- Whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolk in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool completely.
- Shape the Buns:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a long strip, braid, or twist it into your desired shape, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover and let the buns rise for another 20-30 minutes.
- Add the Filling:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Using the back of a spoon, create small wells in the center of each bun. Fill the wells with the custard.
- Brush the buns with the egg yolk mixture.
- Bake and Garnish:
- Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
