The Ultimate Buttercream Frosting Recipe
When it comes to decorating cakes and cupcakes, buttercream frosting is the classic go-to. It’s creamy, rich, easy to make, and endlessly versatile. Whether you’re spreading it on a simple vanilla cake or piping elegant swirls on cupcakes, this buttercream is a must-have in your baking toolkit.
Here’s how to make a smooth, fluffy buttercream that holds up beautifully and tastes amazing.
Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
3–4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
2–4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
A pinch of salt (to balance the sweetness)
Instructions:
Beat the butter:
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed until creamy and pale – about 2-3 minutes.
Add powdered sugar:
Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed until fully incorporated. Scrape down the sides as needed.
Add vanilla and cream:
Add vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons of cream or milk. Beat on medium-high speed for 3–5 minutes until light and fluffy. If the frosting is too thick, add more cream 1 tablespoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
Adjust to taste:
Taste your buttercream – you can add more salt to cut the sweetness or more vanilla for extra flavor.
Use or store:
Use immediately for decorating or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Re-whip before using.
Tips:
For extra smoothness, sift the powdered sugar before using.
Swap vanilla for almond, lemon, or peppermint extract for flavor variations.
Add food coloring gel for vibrant colors without thinning the frosting.
