Ingredients:

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 1/2 cup diced bell peppers (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or a cheese blend)
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bread:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Cut a V-shaped wedge out of the top of each hoagie roll and hollow out some of the bread inside, creating a “boat” shape. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
  2. Cook the Sloppy Joe Mixture:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain any excess fat.
    • Add onions (and bell peppers, if using) to the skillet and sauté until softened.
    • Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Assemble the Bread Boats:
    • Spoon the sloppy joe mixture into the hollowed-out bread boats, packing it down slightly.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the top of each bread boat.
  4. Bake:
    • Wrap the edges of the bread boats with aluminum foil to prevent burning. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm and enjoy!

These bread boats pair wonderfully with a side of coleslaw, fries, or a simple green salad.
